Over the past few months, we’ve seen exciting growth in the small ruminant industry—and with it, a rise in curiosity around small ruminant ultrasound. If you’ve been wondering how to get started or improve your technique, we’ve got you covered! Here are some key things to keep in mind when working with small ruminant ultrasound:
1. Probe Placement For most small ruminant ultrasounds, our go-to recommendation is the C60 T-Handle probe paired with the Flexx ultrasound system. This combination offers both comfort and ease of use. While there are other options available, this setup has consistently delivered great results.
When scanning, we suggest placing the probe in the inguinal area—close to the animal’s flank. While this positioning might feel a bit awkward at first, it quickly becomes second nature with a little practice.
2. Achieving Optimal Contact Proper contact is crucial, especially since ultrasound waves cannot penetrate air, hair, mud, or lanolin. That’s why surface preparation makes a big difference. We recommend thoroughly soaking the flank area with alcohol using a spray bottle. For tougher debris or lanolin, a rough-textured washcloth works wonders.
Once the area is clean and well-lubricated with alcohol or ultrasound gel, press the probe firmly against the skin. Don’t be surprised if it takes more pressure than you’d expect—just be sure to avoid any discomfort for the animal. A clear image should begin to appear shortly after.
